SOUTH OF TOLEDO • JANUARY
THE RECALL WAS CLOSED.
THE SERIAL NUMBER CAME BACK.
SO DID THE FIRE.
Quality auditor Nia Alvarez knows returned appliances leave evidence: worn screws, mismatched parts, and repairs no clean carton can hide. When the same supposedly destroyed serial number appears on heaters returned in three states, she finds recalled machines rebuilt with unapproved safety parts and routed back toward customers.
Northstar's system calls the recall closed. Its contractor certifies every unit destroyed. But winter demand keeps open-box heaters moving through outlet stores, liquidation sales, and secondhand homes—while each department sees only its own clean transaction.
Certain the approved hold will come too late, Nia creates a private routing rule. The shortcut releases fifty-three suspect heaters and puts a temporary worker's name on her decision. Then one reaches Apartment 6C.
A closed record cannot make a dangerous object safe.
