Inside the story

ASHBY, KENTUCKY • EARLY 1990S

TWO LOCKS WERE CHANGED.

NEITHER JOB WAS AUTHORIZED.

THE WORK LOOKS FAMILIAR.

Twenty-year-old Evan Holt has spent three weeks apprenticing at Keene Lock & Safe, learning that opening a stranger's door begins with proving who has the right to ask.

When Claire Dorsey's key stops working twice, Evan recognizes the same installation habits in both unauthorized locks. The obvious suspect is her estranged husband. The shop's records point somewhere more dangerous.

Service tickets, missing stock, and legitimate-looking authorization lead toward someone who has spent years using real locksmiths to enter places he had no right to be. To stop him, Evan must investigate a system built on trust without abusing that trust himself.

The lock did not fail. The permission did.
