BELLWETHER, MICHIGAN • 101 DEGREES
THE GRID SAYS RESTORED.
THE METER SAYS OPEN.
THE HOUSE IS STILL DARK.
Service technician Elena Ortiz trusts physical state over a green status screen. When an automated heat-reduction event leaves Odessa Bell's meter open after the system records a successful restore, one failed command becomes the first visible crack in Bellwether's new grid program.
Across the city, homes with fewer connected devices are easier to shut off and harder to bring back. Every department's rule makes sense alone. Together, they concentrate longer outages in the same streets.
When urgency tempts Elena past the limits of her access, one clean fix drops power to 914 more homes. Now Bellwether must decide who may cut service, who owns restoration, and when a house is truly back.
Power is not restored until the house agrees.
