LYDON, PENNSYLVANIA • 1989
THE NUMBER WAS DISCONNECTED.
THE STREET HAD BEEN DEMOLISHED.
AT 2:13, SOMEONE CALLED FOR HELP.
Switching technician Mara Vélez knows what an open copper pair should carry: nothing. But during the final weeks of Lydon's aging crossbar exchange, a disconnected line begins receiving nightly trouble calls from Bell Street—a block demolished twenty-seven years earlier.
The caller reports smoke, trapped residents, and an operator who keeps telling her to remain on the line. Company records say the building was vacant. Old cable charts, parish ledgers, and a hidden trouble card say otherwise.
With the digital cutover approaching, Mara secretly preserves the obsolete trunk long enough to keep listening. Her unauthorized hold uncovers the names the city erased—but when the dead circuit interferes with a living 911 call, eleven stolen minutes force her to decide what evidence can justify and what no mystery can excuse.
The dead line wants an answer. The living caller cannot wait.
